The University of Mining and Geology "St. Ivan Rilski" has existed as an independent educational institution since 1953. Over the years it has established itself as a training and research center, where engineers are trained in geological, mining and electromechanical specialties, basic and applied research. The university offers all forms of postgraduate qualification. The good combination of general engineering training with more closely profiled knowledge and skills gives wide opportunities for realization of university graduates in the country and abroad. Since the establishment of the university, more than 22,000 engineers have been trained in the field of geology, mining, energy and raw materials, civil and industrial construction, environmental protection, etc., including citizens of nearly 40 European countries , Asia, Africa and South America.
The mission of UMG "St. Ivan Rilski ”is to remain a factor in the creation and development of the intellectual potential of the Bulgarian state, which is designed to ensure the raw material and energy independence of the country, to prepare specialists with engineering qualification with a sufficiently broad profile to work in complex production systems in the exploration, extraction, processing, transport, storage and use of minerals, to carry out important for the society fundamental and applied scientific researches in the field of the mining industry and the geological research work.
This leads to an increase in the responsibilities, importance and tasks of UMG as a unique teaching and research center in its inherent educational and scientific areas. This necessitates the exclusive mobilization of the academic community to solve complex educational, scientific, financial, social and other problems.
In the implementation of the mission UMG “St. Ivan Rilski ”reads:
• the competence, enthusiasm and faith of their teachers, employees and students in the progress of society on the path of knowledge and shared values;
• the good reputation created over the 60-year presence of UMG “St. Ivan Rilski” in the spiritual and economic life in the Republic of Bulgaria;
• cooperation with state and regional institutions and business organizations;
• the expanding partnership with universities and research organizations in and outside the EU.
